Data & Design

The proposed internship is inserted in one of the Interaction and Experience Design Research Lab’s projects concerning research activities within the field of interaction design. The research investigates on the use of data in digital and interactive solutions as nourishment for solutions that imply Artificial Intelligence for UX solutions and as carrier of meaning for functions and user awareness. The intern activities will span from desk research to case study collection and analysis to the mapping of digital tools that support data collection and analysis. The intern will learn methods and approaches for research in the field of design. Additionally, there’s room for the development of the thesis project on the topic.

Physical Lights for Crowd Management

The proposed internship is inserted in one of the Interaction and Experience Design Research Lab’s projects that refer to a European project on the EIT Digital Funding Program. In this project, politecnico di Milano is part of an international consortium that is developing an interactive solution to manage crowd behaviors using lights in physical public spaces. The intern will support the team in the literature and desk research and in the prototyping and testing of the designed solution. The intern will learn how international research funding works and act in practice. Additionally, there’s room for the development of the thesis project on the topic.

Data Tracking and Use for Emergencies

The proposed internship is inserted in one of the Interaction and Experience Design Research Lab’s projects that explore the current situation of sanitary emergency. For this project, the team is exploring the different approaches and solutions concerning the use of data adopted by different Nations in terms of tracking approaches and technologies, and solution involved for both private and public purposes. The intern will support the team in the collection and analysis of case studies and literature learning research approaches and critical thinking. Additionally, there’s room for the development of the thesis project on the topic.

Trends in Consumer Electronics

The proposed internship will be inserted in one of the Pheel Lab’s project concerning research on consumer electronics for younger generations aiming at mapping trends for working and studying activities. The intern will learn how to collaborate in a team with different background and abilities bringing value and exploiting designers’ capability in understanding socio-technical system and contexts.

Design for Stress Assessment

The proposed internship will be inserted in one of the Pheel Lab’s project aimed to developing a concept for a device dedicated to stress assessment and providing tools, including biofeedback strategies, aimed to provide awareness of the stress conditions, and to support stress management. The intern will learn how to collaborate in a team with different background and abilities bringing value and exploiting designers’ capability in developing new devices and apps. Additionally, there’s room for the development of the thesis project on the topic.

Interaction Design & Robotics


Triage Interaction for Potentially Infective Patients

In the situation induced by COVID-19 is becoming clear that the limitation of physical interaction between medical personnel and patients accessing the First Aid Department is of primary importance. Aim of this internship is to investigate and design the physical and interaction aspects of a system aimed at understanding the needs, and assessing the health status, of the persons accessing the First Aid Department when an infectious epidemy is onging.
This internship is supported by the AI and Robotics Lab and is collateral to a proposal under submission to the next H2020 call, where commercial robots will instead be used.

Robot for Bedside Interaction for Infective Patients

In the situation induced by COVID-19 is evident that limitation of physical interaction between medical people and hospitalized infectious patients is of primary importance. Aim of this internship is to investigate and design the physical and interaction aspects of a mobile robot aimed at providing non-critical, infectious patients, on the bedside, with remote communication facilities to interact with doctors and relatives, food and medicine transportation and delivery, and medical data acquisition (temperature, blood pressure). All of these functionalities should be organized in an infection-safe service.
This internship is supported by the AI and Robotics Lab on their Human-Robot interaction research line.

Technological Toy for Autonomous Play for Children With Disabilities

Children with disabilities often have difficulties to play autonomously with other children since the toys available on the market are not usable or accessible. Aim of this internship is to focus on the specific needs of a type of physical or cognitive disability, and design a technological tool that could engage the target users in an autonomous playful activity that could improve their abilities, while relieving care givers (relatives in the present situation) of some of the time dedicated to these subjects.
This internship is supported by the AI and Robotics Lab, where technological toys are developed since many years, also within the research line Playbot4All

Technological Toy for Autonomous Play for Elderly People

Elderly people tend to reject activities that could support them to improve physical and cognitive status. The gamification of such activities may raise their interest. Aim of this internship is the design of the physical and interaction aspects of a technological tool that could engage elderly people and improve, or maintain, at least one of their abilities (e.g., memory, reaction time, or dexterity). The improvement of social interaction is considered as an added value.

Speechless Interaction for Engaging, Affective, Artistic Installation

Aim of this internship is investigating the role of features of interactive, autonomous, speechless artifacts, in the context of Art&Technology exhibits, to involve public in a personal and social interaction that could be remembered and shared.
This internship is supported by the AI and Robotics Lab, as an exploration on topics related to two submitted EU project proposals aimed at working with Art&Technology centers to develop through technological installations a sensibility to the presence of interactive technology in our society, and the relative issues.
